AN AMBULANCE IS NOT NECESSARY!

My name is Debbie Oosterhuis (13-11-1966) and I have PNEA/FNS.
The condition is not life-threatening and resolves more quickly if not attended to.

  • Ambulance is not necessary, control room is aware of my situation.
  • Ambulance will not take me, this is according to agreement.
  • It's hard not to pay attention, but it's helpful for me.
  • I lie safely on my stomach, a stable side position makes me restless.
  • I am not unconscious and I hear sounds from my environment.
  • Muscle spasms in the arms and legs are normal and are part of FNS.
  • Talking is not possible during an attack.
  • It can sometimes help to throw a bottle of water on my neck, it is in the large compartment of my bag including a towel.
  • After some time I can communicate by squeezing my hand/finger. 1 time means: Yes / 2 times means: No / 3 times means: I don't know.
  • Later I can write left-handed, pen and paper in my backpack, in the large compartment of my backpack.
  • After an attack I continue my way independently, this may seem strange to bystanders, but it is the best way for me.

In a Functional Neurological Disorder (FND), something goes wrong with the signals that go back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. Your brain then sends wrong signals to parts of your body. Or they do not process the signals that the body sends to the brain properly.  This can cause you to suffer from all kinds of complaints. Such as paralysis, jerking movements, seizures that resemble epilepsy or blindness.

An FND can occur in any part of the brain. Because the brain has many different functions, the complaints can vary greatly from person to person. You often suffer from multiple complaints.

Common features of a functional neurological disorder are:

  • Paralysis in parts of the body

  • Jerking movements in parts of the body

  • Seizures that resemble epilepsy

  • Problems with your memory

  • Can't see anymore

  • Can't hear anymore
